    ...student and needs his financial aid $? Is it a law to file either Married filed jointly or married filed separately?

    You must file as a married couple, either joint or separate.

    You have to file joint or separate. But it will still effect his financial aid because both of your incomes will have to be reported when he fills out his fafsa.
