    Usually an essay the argues the opposite of what is normally expected to be argued?

    Yes.  But not all essays are as clever or as original as the authors think they are.

    And don't get me started on admissions essays.  If I see one more essay that starts "My interest in healthcare started when xxx got sick", I'm going to have a breakdown.
